Junior Development

The main purpose behind a program for younger students is to instill a love of the game, along with the development of basic basketball skills. With this in mind, and in keeping with Basketball Ontario's philosophy of Fair Play, the emphasis rests with each individual player. To do this means providing equal opportunities for the least to most skillful player. Winning needs to be de-emphasized while the contribution to the team should be the goal. Efforts to single out an individual player should give way to the encouragement of each individual child to perform to the best of their ability, whatever that may be.

The Junior 5/6 Division will operate in the following manner:

1. The rule set shall be FIBA WITH 4 ON 4 - 2 GIRLS - 2 BOYS.

2. Fouls will be recorded but no player shall be ejected from a game except where they become involved in excessive rough play.

3. An official may ask a coach to sit a player down and have the coach explain what is necessary to the player before allowing them to participate again

4. The game shall be played in 8 segments of 5 minutes running time, with 1 minute between segments. At the end of each segment the team will substitute in such away that all players should be replaced

5. No player may play in 2 consecutive segments if there are sufficient substitutions

6. If a player is removed from the court for an injury or coaching (3 above) the substitute may play his/her regular shift

7. Time outs will be 1 for Segments 1 to 3; 1 for Segments 4 to 6; and 1 for Segments 7 & 8ment

8. A team may substitute freely during Segment 8 without regard for conditions stated above. This may be done anytime a violation or foul is called and the clock shall be stopped to allow this.

9. If a player is replaced because of injury or coaching they may return to the game when ready by sending them o the table to wait for a violation or foul.  They will replace the player that replaced them and no other.

10. The free throw line shall be 12' from the basket - 3 feet in front of the standard free throw line but all other positions on the lane will remain the same.

12. High light and copy the following table to record your substitution pattern and provide the table with a copy each game making a new order if you choose - RECORD THE PLAYER'S NUMBER
